Apartment J

A quick turn over on a small budget, this investment property in Porta Venezia, Milan was purchased as a short term holiday rental. Tired and showing a great deal of wear and tear from its previous tenant, the apartment was lacking light and a personality. We adopted a simple but sleak Vintage Italian style as its differentiating point from other rentals in the area.

SHARE PROJECT

As a holiday rental with a high turn over of guests, low maintenance was key to the brief. Similarly, the clients environmental consciousness and awareness for furniture wastage influenced a search for antique and reclaimed items rather than new. Each piece, carefully chosen for its unique story, brings character to the apartment.

The first item; a series of vintage letter press stamps, made from solid wood came from a publishing house outside of Milan. Once used for poster and signage printing, they were given new life in what became a series of sculptural wall art, a historical touch to the living and bedroom areas.

Due to the compact size and open plan layout, grey walls were replaced with white creating a sense of light and space. The existing kitchen was retained replacing only the work top, cooktop, basin and tap ware.

In the dining corner, hints of blue and green, lighten the mood and compliment the 19050s table, chairs (acquired from a film set) and repurposed vespa lamp.

An antique cocktail trolley was acquired from an online seller, painted in a deep green for a touch of elegance and fun to the apartment.

Hand engraved stools were re coloured and repurposed, as bed side tables. Likewise the bed head, made from two removable velvet cushions and suspended on a curtain rail was purpose made for the project.

An antique travelling trunk sourced for the living area forms both a generous coffee table and an opportunity to store both guide books and games for guests.
