Penthouse Dolci: reworking a Milan penthouse, in progress

A first look behind the scenes at Penthouse Dolci in Milan: the apartment before the works, the demolition and the stone chosen for the new interiors.

Penthouse Dolci is a top-floor apartment in Milan, wrapped by a long terrace with views over the rooftops and the city skyline. The works are still underway, so this is a first look behind the scenes: how the apartment looked when we started, the demolition, the stone we chose and the new shell taking shape.

As we found it

The apartment had not been touched in decades: wooden window frames, old radiators, patterned floors and a layout of small, closed rooms. The light and the views were there, but the plan kept them from reaching the heart of the home.

Taking it back to the shell

Demolition opened the apartment up. Partitions came down, ceilings were opened and doorways were widened, until only the structure and the views were left. The rubble left the site bucket by bucket across the terrace.

Choosing the stone

While the works went on, we visited the stone yard to choose the slabs for the new interiors: a soft grey marble with gentle veining, and a bold green stone with deep movement. Seeing the full slabs is the only way to decide how each one will be cut and where it will go.

A new shell

With the old finishes gone, the empty rooms show the light of the long windows. New insulation now covers the ceilings, the first step towards a quieter, warmer home. The next stage is the new layout, and we will share it here as it takes shape.
